St. Helier - Jersey, Area information.

Saint Helier.
With a population of more than 30,000, St. Helier has been a tourist destination for most people for cultural venues, architectural and entertainment attractions. Saint Helier is the capital of Jersey Islands. It is one of the 12 parishes and the largest of the entire Channel Islands. 9% of the whole land area of the Jersey Island comprises the surface area of St Helier. It covers the area of 5,738 vergees.

Early pictures of St. Helier show that it was a small fishing village on the hill. Right now, St. Helier Parish Church is far from the sea. But during the early times, the parish church was just on the edge of the hill, which was near the offshore islet, Hermitage. This islet is the very site that witnessed the martyrdom of Helier.

If you plan to go and visit St. Helier, you will be amazed with the tourist attractions that wait to be explored in this beautiful parish. One of the first things that you need to see is the Liberation Square. This spot in town, which was the terminus of Jersey Railway before, is now the place where the Jersey Tourism office is located.

Another museum that will show you the strong relationship of the islanders of Jersey is the Maritime Museum. This will give you a view of the attractions that feature the Liberation of Jersey.

People in Jersey are very nationalistic. You will hear the noonday gun that is fired everyday to commemorate the defense shown by the Jersey Islanders for over 300 years. You can visit Elizabeth Castle, the biggest fortress that shows the effort made in defending this place from Elizabethans time up to the occupation of the Germans in World War II. In addition, there is the military exhibit, the house of St. Helier and the magnificent views of the sea.

If you are the athletic type, you need not fear depriving yourself of this interest while traveling. St Helier has Musketeer Leisure, which is the skate park and 12 trampoline beds. This leisure area also has the best cafes and restaurants with some of the most delectable delicacies in town. You can also lure around the water gardens on St. Helier waterfront.
